Striker

Rylee's third grade class purchased butterfly larva (enough for everyone in the class) and watched them grow into butterflies. They got to bring their butterflies home today and Rylee was going to let hers go. We took the jar outside, took some pictures and then she opened the lid and let it go. It was so funny because right before we let it go, she told me "I feel like a parent." When we let it go we saw it fly away and land on the grass a few feet away. We went and took some more pictures of it and Rylee was concerned that it was going to starve to death so we went back in the house to get an orange slice for it to "suck on." When we went back outside, the butterfly (named Striker), was no where to be found. Rylee was DEVASTATED!!! She looked for it everywhere and was crying saying she never really wanted to let it go and that she missed it. I told her that is what parents feel like when their kids grow up and leave the home. It was so sad!

She is ok now. She even wrote a few paragraphs about her experience.
Striker, Rylee's 3rd grade butterfly.

In 3rd grade I got a little larva. It was a baby caterpillar and I got to watch it grow until it was a fully grown Painted Lady Butterfly. It was a boy named Striker. I got to take him home and after dinner I let him go. I went to give him an orange slice but he was not there. He was probably looking for a family. I am really sad, but I know that he will find a family and that it was good that I let him go. He will have a good life and I bet I will miss him but I know that freeing him was the best thing to do.

That is adorable! And hear breaking. Poor Rylee! I love that he's a boy--how do you tell anyway? :) And I also love that the butterfly went to "find another family"--he'll never find one as good as yours--but what a cute thought :)

That is so sweet!
At least she didn't stick a pin in it for her "BUG COLLECTION" like Kalyse did to hers...I made sure it was really dead first! I think we confirmed that after I saw sweet Jeffrey trying to force feed it a grape a little too "forcefully" =)
Sweet Marci taught the kids how to stick pins in the bugs they find and and pin them to a piece of cardboard.
The kids freaking love it...they have so many rolie polies pinned to their cardboard scrap...It's disgusting, but they love it, so I let em =)

Oh my word...she is so cute! I am jealous, I paid for a butterfly for Brayden, and he did not get to bring his home :(! What a bummer for Brayden. Oh well, I am glad Rylee had such a fun experience!

Rylee is such a compassionate girl. I am so proud that she let Striker go. Striker will never forget the person who helped him grow into such a beautiful butterfly. She and Mya have grown into beautiful girls because of the love and care they have received from you! What goes around comes around.
